When we talk of faith
the example of the titans
the pillars, the saints
the leaders before us
Peter, Paul, Mother Teresa
Isaiah, Elijah, John in the river
Abraham, Daniel in the lions’ den
Luther, Martin, John Wesley,
others of our family
all of them
Where is their faith?
Present, in their acts of faith
stepping out of their comfort
going where they are called
None of them half-way
not incremental, not timid faith
Bold, “step-out-of-the-boat,
go-where-you-do-not-know” steps
onto the water, into the streets, the deserts
denying themselves
We too, the same God, the same savior
the same family of faith
called to use our gifts, our strength
the same spirit burning within us
to take up our cross
and find our calling
to step out of the boat
to leave all, and follow the Christ
wherever he may lead
