The deer, hungry, late winter
finding food at the base,
the little warm, exposed places
at the base of the cemetery stones,
the little lees by the gray granite,
the dark slate, warm
drawing the spring sunlight
Finding life, against starvation
by the stones of the dead
at the edge
the woods beyond
