Waking in confusion,
out of place, with machines
beeping and connected
out of his fitful sleep
without her for
a few moments
he called for her
to be by his side,
to be with him
in this public place
not yet set apart for him
to touch his hand, his brow
the side of his cheek
to minister to his needs
to be present with him
all of which she lovingly did
as soon as she knew
he had called for her.
