I
say I forgive them
for
the hurt they caused me;
I
have spoken it often
I
pray it frequently, repeating,
as
I drive down from Houlton;
but
what would I say, really,
if
they were standing beside me
what
if they saw me in church
or
down at Debbie’s Deli,
would
I say, “I forgive you”
if
they were right in my face?
How
do I react in my body,
my
blood vessels, my feelings,
when
I see a status update
their
picture on Facebook,
or
words on Twitter,
Bringing
me back
to
the moment they hurt me;
I
say I forgive them
but
is the wound still open
not
yet scar tissue, healed,
smooth
to my touch.
