We must love them

addicted, hurting,

those broken,

as Christ loves us.

We must not judge

because we are not

their judge, God is;

we must forgive them.

we must pray for them

in recovery efforts;

we must pray for

their loved ones as well.

I say I forgive them – v4

I say I forgive them

for the hurt they caused me;

I have spoken it often

I pray it frequently, repeating,

as I drive down from Houlton;

but what would I say, really,

if they were standing beside me

what if they saw me in church

or down at Debbie’s Deli,

would I say, “I forgive you”

if they were right in my face?

How do I react in my body,

my blood vessels, my feelings,

when I see a status update

their picture on Facebook,

or words on Twitter,

Bringing me back

to the moment they hurt me;

I say I forgive them

but is the wound still open

not yet scar tissue, healed,

smooth to my touch.

Don’t seek to change them

to make them stop their addiction

you cannot anyway

they would not listen;

love them where you love them

praying through the pain

Caring without judging

don’t try to stand in their shoes

you don’t know their story

what they have been through;

a new wound cut

a new wound cut

into scar tissues

rent wide open

different players each time

but the same kind of issue

claiming as their own

a piece of the kingdom

feeling the tapestry unraveling

one more thread

I hear the drumbeat

another bit of history

an itch on my skin

flaking off scar tissue

a rent in the flesh

the wound reopened

I say I forgive them

for the hurt they caused me

but do I really

I have spoken it often

I pray it frequently

driving down from Houlton

of all the way to Bangor;

but what would I say

if they saw me in church

if they were standing before me

or down at Debbie’s,

waiting for fresh bread

would I say I forgive them

would I mean it, fully,

if they were right in my face?

How do I react, my body,

my blood vessels,

when I see a status update

their picture on Facebook

or words on Twitter

I say I forgive them

not ready to heal the breach

not seeing a solution

walking forward in faith

trying to be faithful
