they all have been born after Columbine

they all have been born after Columbine
under the lengthening shadow
of the gun, the chaos
the bleakness of this world

they have no memory
of a time before, simpler,
before the mass shootings
the endless debates

they all have been targeted
learning different lessons at school
active shooter/ lock-down drills
part of their school days
