I
first heard the awful news, driving, alone
tears
welling up, uncontrollable
the
thought of young children
in
the madman’s sights
my
hand to my mouth
hearing
my own gasp
reverberating,
echoing in the car
An
audible gasp, remembered
a
nation frozen, transfixed
all
of us brought into tragedy, yet again,
by
the radio, TV screens, the images
the
calls for gun law reform
not
wanting to believe
An
audible gasp, in horror,
the
innocents lost in their youth
not
removing the bodies
the
story of the multiple gunshots
knowing
death reigned inside
An
audible gasp was our common response
as
each person faced terror
alive
in our hearts that day,
Never
to be forgotten
