as with the Prodigal and his older brother
we learn from both sisters
from Mary and from Martha
in this story of Jesus in Bethany
we see Mary choosing to sit with Jesus
to be at the Master’s feet
we see Martha busy preparing
making ready, the meal that they would eat
we want to chuck the world
to be like Mary, to worship
to sit at Jesus’ feet, drinking the word;
but in a very human way,
the more important less, in truth,
learning from our mistakes, from Martha
how not to live, to be led astray
learning from Martha, what not to do
her worry, her trust not in God
following the rules fervently
seeking to serve to the exclusion
knowing perhaps this was the Messiah
but held by hidebound laws
not seeking the Master, to be with Him
only seeking to serve, to offer
hospitality, not worship
when standing before our Lord.
