the words we share
the same, ancient
in gathering for the supper
for Holy Communion,
one body together
blessing, joy, humbly
sharing the words together
coming forward to receive
the gifts from Christ
His sacrifice for us
accepting the bread,
“the body of Christ broken
for you”
expecting the cup,
“the blood of Christ shed
for you”
each time the same
instead, something different,
when she offered the cup,
not the gift of Christ’s
sacrifice
her words unfamiliar:
“the blessings of Christ”
these words she spoke to us
these words giving me pause
imparting that gift, from
God,
the wine tasting different
not of sacrifice, a gift
as we received the cup
blessings of our Savior
the blessings of Christ
the gift of His love
poured out for us

“when
you offered the cup. Usually is it
"the blood of Christ shed for you";
but
you focused on the blessings.”
