gone the ancient freedom,
from your hills, your woodlands,
thick with memory, a pilgrimage,
down to the mighty Dnipro
flowing to the raging sea…
who will protect
Ukraina,
from the Moskals, their evil,
such is the misfortune,
the trials, the struggles,
of this lonely orphan girl…
the dark-haired
maidens,
orphans homeless,
cries among the poplars,
longing for ancient glory,
freedom they once knew…
the verses now
bitter,
their grief ever-present,
chains upon us, heavy,
the great loss of Kozak's glory,
this forlorn maiden, Ukraina…
