from the well of our sadness
our song of that story,
the fight of their people
long before the sorrow
that we cry for Ukraina,
At the story of her misfortune,
our hearts begin to weep…
formerly Kozaks cherished,
the mighty fight before them,
overcoming the serpents, the waves,
the ravens at the ready, waiting for them vainly,
in that battle where they vanquished,
cast off their yokes for freedom, for glory,
oh, may that day come again, very soon…
may the ancient Kozaks rise up, a legion,
from their lofty tombs remember,
all your noble high mountains,
descend to meet the challenge,
fight of your people, raging, united,
to reclaim memory, ancient glory,
of your freedom that was devoured,
“My dear heart! My darling!”, Ukraina…
