wanting to quit

I remember your face
so certain, so sure
the lines crunched together
to will yourself forward
even as the pain gripped you
wanting to quit
to give up
but pushing through
your pain, your sorrow
the earthquakes in your life
the challenges you faced.

catch and release

for a reason, for a season
a time in the world
so have I handled friendships
for most of my life
few friends have I carried
stayed close to in my life
If I wrote a chapter
of my friendships
in honesty it would probably be,
“catch and release”;
but there is pain in that reality
in that way of living
looking in the mirror
because each of them have informed
the me I am today
for a reason, for a season
has been the truth;
but I pray that, for some,
it will be my journey of life.
