Haiku
Written July 7, 2004 22:13

Haiku is a Japanese structure poem format. It consists of three lines with five, then seven, then five syllables. Generally, they are meant to be expressions of sensation (usually of nature). That is, something you saw, or smell. Like little poetry photographs.
Didn't haiku develop from the final "answering" part of a longer structure, the renga: a thing rather like a sonnet, where an idea is introduced, developed then replied to, or thrown into a new light? So a haiku could be compared to the closing couplet of a ShakespeareanSonnet.
The RenGa consists of a waki (sp?) followed by a hokku (sp?). These forms have been translated into English as 7-7, 5-7-5. Also, the RenGa is a truly collaborative form of poetry - so a RenGa wiki page is much more ideal than a HaiKu wikki page. Also, wakki just so happens to sound a whole lot like wiki.
Haiku is usually spooged into its basic 5-7-5 format and then used to say anything. This is ok, provided you recognize that you're not really writing Haiku.
I've also heard that the 5-7-5 format is too easy in English to suggest the same kind of profound economy that a Japanese haiku would.'
More importantly, it is difficult to even count syllables in English. How many does 'file' have? What about 'shit'? In Japanese, syllables are always clearly delimited.
If you think the answer to both questions is One, understand that a Japanese speaker would normally pronounce them as fai-ru and shi-to.
''And even more, Japanese do not count syllables, but "uttering time". i.e.: DÔ (way), as it has a "long O", counts as TWO "syllables".''

I wrote a program in elisp to generate haiku at random from a buffer. I've also begun to write 'aesthetics' functions which judge lines according to an aesthetic function. The computer will then generate a number of random lines (100 to 10000, depending on how fast the computer is an how much time you have on your hands) and pick the most beautiful.

Treasure Trove

These words that I find,
hear inside me, or see in my mind’s eye,
write and share
are my treasure trove

a finder in fact
with original owner unknown
(unless God will take the curtain call)
of gems buried and ready to be found
as precious as the gold, silver,
found in processed form.
from fertile ground.
The mind of man.

Frozen Image

Down the path
Away from the road,
Bustle of the highway
In the inner quiet
Cold of winter
Emptiness, sadness,
In my heart

Turn inside
Recalling a sudden scene
Standing, transformed
Away from view
Out in the open

Catch of air – shortness of breath
Loss of warmth
Crunch of snow
Snap of branch
Startled revelation
Facing the reality
Of this moment

A burst of downy wings
Shards, detritus, clutter
Festooned the ground
A vole track
Ended abruptly
A smudge of red

A remembered echo, residue
Of the event
The tree fallen in the wood
With or without sound
No human witnesses
But there, on the ground

Cardboard boxes,
Phone calls, without responding
Left belongings
Of rapid parting
And decisions made

Death frozen in place
Serenely, as it should be
With swallowed feelings
Compartmentalized

Impressions
Catches of light and shadow
The beat of predator feathers
Pressed
Thrust into the crust
Preserved, as in paraffin

Cataloged and filed away
Without emotion
Words and unfilled promises,
Archived, haunting
Mocking

Arc of
Feathers
Captured in the coating –
Fingers,
Hands scooping
A pile of leaves
For bagging

Holding themselves
In the hug of the
Invisible wings
Alone

Frozen image
Fleeting, under melting
Life and death
Lost in time
Transformed by internalizing
The image, years old
A metaphor for today

Brooding
Ponderous steps, footprints
Of the road
Down the path
I must take

Alone
After the dying
Sudden
But inevitable
Nonetheless

Future Curmudgeons

I can see them,
In my mind,
Fifty years hence
Two old friends, by then
Friendly banter, tall tales
Fish stories

There they were,
On the bank of the pond,
Seven or nine,
No more than that

Fishing poles, tackle box,
Knotted line,
And a net between them
Thick with the muck and wet
As they try to catch the big one

Hornpout and koi, and goldfish
As big as their arms
Just out of reach
In the murk
Or surfacing
Too near to forget

Seasoned veterans
Already, or so they seem.
On the their own
In the park,
Under the July sun

No waders yet;
But they will come
Along with more practiced yarns
Told with echoes of memory
When they are older

Full Strawberry Moon

Was that right, or
Maybe a rose moon
Shared that night in June
Hovering behind
A curtain of mist
Humid air
On my lenses

Stare at our satellite
See the face in orange
And dusty rose
Full moon, new blood
Across the miles
Seeing it together
Though apart

Are we done
Oh, yeah
Words, lectures
Blur, babble
Stumble out of bed
Clothes, clean or dirty
Unshaven, unkempt
Skim and prepare
To get by
Mark the time
Check the calendar
Finish line
Come

Half Staffs #poetry #RonaldReagan #Flag #Independence #July4th #America #UnitedStates #pride

D-Day and The Fourth
Bookends of a month
In the life of the Nation
The death of a President

Reminders each day
Against blue sky or grey
Of sacrifices, and lives lost
Defending our rights

Freedom isn’t free
The media doesn’t see
The good of the troops
In those lands of sand and
Minarets, martyrs
And madmen

Freedom, food, water, hope
On the line, in the chaos,
In the storm, in the desert,
In the streets of Baghdad

Snap in the breeze, or limp on the cord
Sentries marking the honor
To a man, I didn’t support
But honor, nonetheless
For his optimism, faith
In this place, this idea

The rightness of our dream
Lost for so long in the malaise
The hurt from Dallas to Tehran

On guard still,
Our finest in the field
Pawns or patriots, whatever your view

Remember to vote, to have a say
To remember them all

Snap to attention,
And pledge allegiance
To this nation

For it’s the best hope
As Reagan knew, and we do too
So whether half staff or whole
We remember the call,
The duty we share,

To herald the hope,
The dream we hold dear
This Fourth and all year.
