Flapping in the cold wind
the grey skies, the feel of winter so soon
the flagpole out of the small house
held tightly against the blast
a flag of our country
snapping, tattered edges
faded threads, lines in the stitching
almost translucent now
How long has it been a sentinel
stood on watch, to honor
to remind, to remember
snapping tight in the wind
waving at attention
