God helps those who help themselves
Ancient wisdom a lie,
the truth of the powerful
placing a burden, a curse,
“God helps those who help themselves.”
So arrogant, overstated,
the privileged, the righteous
casting their neighbors
into the dust, the pit.
The real truth different, hopeful,
from the well of God’s loving grace;
God helps those with no chance to help themselves
the unrighteous, each one of us.
God loves the sinner, the repentant,
the downtrodden, the broken;
thankfully, God helps
the unrighteous, each one of us.
