one of you

these words of Jesus

as we sat around the table,

“one of you will betray me;

Peter, you will deny me;

all of you will run away.”

words to chasten,

to wick the excitement

what joy they had

in the upper room

silence fell upon them

contemplating these words of Jesus

what they must have felt,

knowing it was true.

our flesh consuming us

our zealotry a poison

that can bring us down

our impatience, our greed

getting in the way of service

betraying Christ in our acts

The others, the leaders, the crowds
they could merely hate him
the Christ, the Messiah,
the man, the Savior, Jesus

Only the disciples, those he loved
those who walked with Jesus
they alone close enough
they alone could betray him

Only those who love Jesus can betray him – v2

Only those close to Christ
who truly love Jesus
only the twelve
(or any one of us)
they alone close enough
to betray the Son of God
when our love for the Master
intimate, family, failing
becoming the Prodigal, Judas
to betray him utterly
to give him over to them
to send him to the cross

Could it be me
that the Master spoke about
could I be the betrayer
causing him to be captured
by omission or commission
what would be my sin
causing him pain
letting evil in
taking him away
