a jail-yard shiv

thrust into my torso

a rusted blade

tearing into flesh

seeking to maim

words of hurt

may they see their error – v4

I pray for the bullies

for their pain, their anger

not knowing their stories

what they have lived through;

but knowing there is something

deep in their story

that explains their actions,

the choices they make.

I pray that they would change,

may they see their error,

may they see the world

through their victims’ eyes,

walking more gently

breaking the pattern, the chain

the path they had chosen

His way in the world.

I pray forgiveness

for the bullies,

those who have hurt,

who have lashed out;

those who have swallowed pain

who have acted out

who have broken God’s law

in this life.

I pray that God

would soften,

would change them,

that they would gain

a giving heart, open, ready;

that the Spirit would change them

that they would release their pain

with more healthy choices.

for the bullies

scars of the bully – v3

hurt of their words

lasting, cutting,

deep into my flesh

pain of their abuse

far too many times the victim

in the schoolyard

before the watching crowd

thinking back, remembering

being bullied, tormented

my nose bloodied

more times that I want to remember

watching the watchers

the bystanders

feeling alone, watched

my response written

on the face of each bystander

to see if I would cry

if I would fight my attacker

out in the jungle

the noisy schoolyard.

the jeers of the bystanders

thinking back, remembering

forty years later, more,

being bullied, tormented

my nose bloodied

watching the bystanders

the jeering watchers

egging on the bullies

that I would fight them

in the coliseum, Christians

the Roman gladiators

lowly slaves

the jeers of the bystanders

the paying customers

here for a show

me just the meat

feeling alone, watched

my response written

on the face of each bystander

to see if I would cry

if I would fight my attacker

out in the jungle

I pray for forgiveness

I pray for forgiveness

for the bullies, the victims,

for those times when I have

lashed out in anger

when I have hurt those I love

I pray for forgiveness

from my family, my neighbors

all those I have hurt

caught up in the flesh

in the ways of the world

in selfish self-interest

in taking, not giving

not offering love

I pray for forgiveness

from God, from Jesus,

from the Spirit when I disregard

the Spirit’s urgent word for me

I pray for forgiveness

until I reach eternity
