no room in the middle – v3

the only seats remaining open
are only on the edges
the front, the back
on the outsides
the edge of the field
the sanctuary, the pews
the seats that remain open
the only places of welcome
for those without seats
were assigned long ago

assigned seats – v2

We sit in the same place
assigned seats, in the sanctuary
our neighbors, beside us
in the courts, in the journey
in the Temple of God.

Assigned seats in the Temple
as it has been always;
How this must feel
to be left out,
to be an other.

only the gleanings

only the gleanings
the obstructed view seating
the middle taken
as if assigned seats
we need to be mindful
for the new people;
would strangers
feel welcome
in our piece of the Temple
in the body of Christ.

if you are worthy

How many times
have my words separated
hurt someone’s feelings
cut someone off;
how many ways
have I conditioned acceptance
saying you can come
I will listen to you
if you are worthy
when I myself
am nothing but clay?

peeled of our skin

peeled of our skin
stripped of all differences
our earthly distinctions
the things on the outside
our color, our flesh
that sets us apart.

on the inside the same
all of us broken
all one in Jesus
all of us children
the body of Christ
loved equally by God.

broken

broken, schism
gossip, no reason, sarcasm
seeing only differences
fault in our neighbors
bullying others
casting them out
How is this love
how can we call ourselves Christians
if we are the hand
and we say the foot
is outside the body.

because they are different

Discrimination in any form
because they are different
is against God, His perfect will
for God made us different
different skills,
different interests
different gifts
of the one Spirit.
All of them needed
parts of one body;
all together
the body of Christ.
