Frozen Marsh

Steam rose
Over the ribbon threaded
Through the frozen marsh
This waking

Frost encrusted the
Silent cattails,
Highlighted the skin of
Still-green reeds
Browning leaves, rushes
And skeletal scrub

Ice too soon
But chill only today
Ready to bleed away
With the dawning

Pair

Craning to glimpse
Around the bend
Behind the trees
Hiding in the fog

Our swans
Finding solitude
Beside the other
In open water

Alone together
Away from the bustle,
The noise,
Of the road

Stepping Through - edited

A slit cut through
gray, layered bunting
morning sky

Yellow light and white light
Sol walking, pushing,
stepping through
a portal he cut
knee-high curtain,
left leg, right arm
through the canvas of the clouds.

propelling the light
onto the stage
starting the day

Daily Anniversaries

Finding the right words
Overwhelmed, blessed
Shouting my love
each day, for you

Bursting with joy now
and from the first kiss.

Stronger and stronger are the feelings;
from a place I have never been,
even from the beginning.

Here's to a lifetime together –
precious minute by special minute.

Pair

A pair
trumpeter swans
pressed close
in the sliver
open water
between the growing ice
in the pond
beside the highway
this November morn

Parting

I can't wait
for Saturday
when our parting
is but of our lips

When we don't have to leave
each other's side;
when we can linger
and love

Morning Drive

A skin of frost on the ground,
in the branches, the yellowed fields
film of ice on the pond
low fog lit on down the road
light in the windshield
shafts highlight
glowing milkweed pods
bursting for later rebirth
Quiet, rumble of the engine
Heading from home
heading to work
reversed in the dark

Letting me live

Barry in the Morning

He’s on the stereo
Smoky, sultry,
Words dripping
After waking,
Start of day

You in my arms
Smell of you
Touch, Kiss,
Linger on your neck
Dance in the kitchen
Pull you in close

Down the road
With me in the car
Bass throbbing in the speaker
Sing along to our words
Openly, wanting you

Away from you, my dear
But you’re with me
Your scent, smile,
Your Love

With me
And Barry in the morning

Arc of the Sky

Warming blue
Across the arc of the dome
He left for us after the Flood
Daubs of color
Dabbed on the sky
Pristine edges
Glinted and glowing
Past dawn

Frozen breath
Frost on the
orange, red, yellow
Fall foliage
Green grass
Cold windshields
Parked cars

Red Sox in Four

Eight straight
ain't it great
A nation in joy
because of our boys

Won in strong fashion
with luck, pitching and passion
A night with a lunar eclipse
song of joy on our lips

Here's to the Red Sox Nation
in a state of utter jubilation

Waking Sky

A fall sky in slumber
warming fan brush strokes,
horsehair bristles,
pushed across the fall tableau
Deep burgundies and dark below
Headlights on

Down the road
round the bend
the view brighter
champagne and plumb and wisp
a bluing of the sky

Another wind
down the twisting backroad
translucent yellows
screens of color

Farther on
white takes the stage
above a fireball flame sun

Then the sun filled
the windshield below the visor
warming my face
on this fall morning
after the dark

Her Name

Her name on my lips
her song in my heart

A marathon finished
waiting for laurels

A race won but
New beginnings

A new life
new challenges
mountains to climb
Together

Hair Cut

A grand presentation
the three of us
early one Sunday morning
just before Easter

A grand march
with appropriate solemnity
orange Easy-Bake Oven mixing bowl
festooned in his outstretched hands
with her locks, curls, hair

Safety scissors
weren’t really safe,
now were they
from little hands
and minds with industry and mischief

Bows that would have to be taped
to hide the artistry of these craftsmen
a little too successful in their trade

Shock of the audience – mom and dad
woken from slumber
to the sight
of our grand presentation
that morning.

Sports Bacchanalia

Red Sox, Patriots,
UNH Hockey.
Soccer, football, NASCAR
and others
too great to number

Budweiser, Cape Cod chips
Nachos, Pepto
Oh I can't wait
for rest and
for slumber

Cardinals, cold fall air
bring on the Series
Where's the clicker,
the remote,
My eyes are bleary

Red Sox Win

Red Sox win
Yankees lose
A story so big
It led the news

Bumped politics
Down the page
It may even reduce
New England road rage

A-Rod and Jeter
What can be sweeter
Oh look,
We caught a cheater

Taking two from them
In their park
Big Papi
Was our spark

Down and out
A three-oh slide
Not the end for this
Team with Pride

Red Sox Nation
Delirious
This whole World Series
Will be just as serious.

Reverse the Curse
All these ages
So this club’s history
Will fill more pages

I got a chance to meet poet Natasha Trethewey on the Mall in Washington, DC last weekend as part of the 2004 National Book Festival (http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/), in the Poetry Pavilion (http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/04/pavilions/poetry/index.html).

Here's their page on her:

Also check out Natasha's page at Emory:
http://www.creativewriting.emory.edu/faculty/trethewey.html

Great imagery in her work, and a fascinating melding of cultures in her genealogy and life experience.

Cross

Spreading intersected contrails
Like the frost lines off the skates
in Fantasia’s winter scene

Growing, living crystals
written on water vapor, molecules
not celluloid

Purposeful strokes, thrust across the sky
warming and fading, dying
in the October sunset

Half a V

A living line
row of stitches
snaking across the sky
Geese heading south
with only half a V

Discordant sight
Out of sync
Struggling
for warmer climes

Quartermaster

Corner store,
Hole in the wall,
loaded for every need

A story of Storyville and how its
done down in the Big Easy
Inspectors and the men in blue
On the make, on the take
Look the other way for a stake

Brash and bare
owner and soapbox,
Ready audience –
Transplanted northerner,
interested transient

Bag of cold crawdads
Spicy and fresh
Twist and eat, such fingers
Carcasses in the drum by my feet
Drinking in the yarn
Of the storyteller.

Aurora

Below the dome of the stars
in the February sky
Pull over to the shoulder
Visible breath

Dancing lights, flickering stars
sway to the images
Stored on rods and cones
Turquoise and ruby red grapefruit
Pale canary and pure blue

Froze me for a while
Separated from my journey
By the light show,
the echo of the solar flares

The Pumpkin is Calling

The coachman’s at the door
Checking his watch
He knows the score,
The sequence, the deadline

Down the road
Heeding the call,
the end of the magic
Door closing too soon
As night, PM
Crosses to ‘Morn

Sitter watching TV
and the clock
Meter running
Another hour, a few more dollars
Before the gong
When the coach
Reverts to reality
