Short cropped hair of black
Full beard of stubble, four days old
Gray joining the jagged black shards
Menacing, reaching for each patient
Hammer for knee or noggin,
Whichever the need
An image presented full in my mind’s eye
Sulphur from the lips, heat in the nostrils
Conjured as they all are
Wisps, pond fog
Or steam off a pot of soup
Wrapping round my head
Spoon to my flushed checks
Sagging eyes, reaching for sleep
Goatee and stubble of brown and gray
My face in the mirror too.
