At the high tide mark
at the place between the tides
small shells, small stones
beach glass made smooth
in the tumbling of the surf
little treasures,
the ocean in miniature
in the band of the beach
where the water and the sand meet
where the stones
work against one another
where the battles of life and death
repeat themselves, over and over
little worlds revealed
in the small shells, small stones
