He Alone Knew

Seeing Christ on the shore
coming into the waters
hearing John’s message
his cry to the people

Christ coming toward him
into the waters
to be baptized
to begin his ministry

He alone knew
the divinity of his cousin
the one who made him leap
within his mother’s womb

John trembling
unsure for the first time
the one he had foretold
falling into the waters
in his loving arms
