Standing before Christ, there at the well
what did she truly hear, in the words that he said
revealing himself, the truth of who he is
saying so much more, to the stranger, the alien
the woman at the well, the Samaritan
whom he should not address at all
a broken woman, there at the well
they were alone at midday, in the burning sun
revealing who he is, the Messiah, the Son
What did she hear, did she believe his direct words
when she shared in the village, her neighbors
difficult questions in that air
who he said he is, the Son of the living God
sent to save the whole world,
the fulfillment of the word
