these weren’t the words of Moses
the words Jesus was speaking
these weren’t the ancient words
spoken for centuries
these weren’t the words in scripture
the formal ritual of Passover
the words of the Seder
spoken for centuries
we sat there frozen
in the upper room with Jesus
with feet that had been cleaned
by our Lord, by our Master
nothing about this night was the same
these new words of Jesus
confused by His words
by this night, by everything
a new covenant of blood
by His words of sacrifice
intermingled with the ancient words
of love, of offering.
