Air given substance
mass, dimension,
as if we could cut it
and serve it on a plate
Now suddenly summer
not hot, humid, but thick
burning off the morning,
a coolness of spring
weight in the air
the sounds, the motion,
waking of new morning,
tamped down, slowed;
the minutes longer
as if by heavy, sticky air
A web of the morning
lowered to the ground
as though an invisible blanket;
our world ensnared, wrapped
in the waves of the heat
Air given substance
form, function,
as if it was a bed of kelp
in the tidal seas
