In Praise of Weeding – v5

Outside, out back, in the garden
kneeling down by the edge of the grass
Rich loam held between my fingers;
A grip of the stems, roots, balls of grass
pulled up through the wet
the rain-drenched soil

A smell to the mulch, the grass,
wraps itself around me
the water from heaven;
A newness of this morning
after the summer shower.

A patch cleared of the unwanted
weeds pulled out of the garden;
Separated from the wheat,
the chaff for burning
the wheat to be gathered in.

A wonderful closeness to nature
pulling weeds in the garden;
God’s lessons for us
of all that He provides
of our role in creation, His purpose,
through the work of my hands.
