a body uncovered – v3

I looked aghast at the video
I thought of his family
how I would feel as his father
seeing him in that condition, like that
left in the street, abandoned
his humanity intact,
though they sought to take it from him
making the victim out to be guilty
a body uncovered, left, exposed,
where the bullets found him
this young man gunned down
seemingly for no reason
a body uncovered, watched,
left on the hot pavement, the street
his blood in a pool, before him,
the stain of their shame, the shooting,
callous indifference, of authority,
of the cries of his parents, his loved ones,
his neighbors watching,  seeing,
that they didn’t seem to care.

words of color – v3

we don’t usually think of this
of the meaning in color
but the races divided
by words of judgment
words of color, look it up,
claimed by those in power
different castes, classes
by the words of color

white, purity, as the driven snow
red, blood, the scalps of the white man
yellow, cowardice, jaundiced, slanted eyes
black, darkness, evil intent, lesser

words of color, with purpose,
with preconceived meaning
names of the colors, weighted,
of different people, judged,
bias imbedded, layered,
in the labels chosen, hidden
claimed by those in power
in the forming this nation

Masks of Clay Only – v3

They focus on our differences
claiming they are superior
somehow endowed by the Creator
with some mark of grace

But we are like masks of clay only
the differences between us, on the surface
false grounds to claim another unworthy
when we all carry our portion of sin

Only when we come to Jesus
when we accept His saving grace
only then are we made worthy
to come before our God

Working in the vineyards
in the fields of the Savior
our humbly response only
to the grace given by God

Nothing we can do to earn heaven
to the one life eternal
all of us like our neighbors
needing Christ to be restored

None can claim something greater
if they do it is a bald faced lie
all of us are the same, broken
before the touch of God.

a body uncovered – v2

I looked aghast at the video
I thought of his family
seeing him like that
left in the street
his humanity intact
though they sought to take it from him
making the victim out to be guilty
a body uncovered, left, exposed,
where the bullets found him
this young man gunned down
seemingly for no reason
a body uncovered, watched,
left on the hot pavement
his blood in a pool, before him,
the stain of their shame
callous indifference, of authority,
of the cries of his parents
his neighbors watching,  seeing,
that they didn’t seem to care.
