In the classroom, the courtroom,
at the register, at the deli,
in line, in traffic, to your neighbor,
in the living room, on the street,
We are always on, listen up…
 
Life is a performance, a test,
We are all actors on the stage, but
this is not just theatre, it is more important,
Everyone is paying attention, watching,
what we say, what we do in life.
 
So, we all should model best behavior,
We should act more kindly, gently,
seeking to understand and not judge,
to act humbly, be slow to anger,
We should follow the golden rule…

knowing her trials, her struggles

bringing representation to her

driving to her home

meeting her where she lived;

honoring her, worthy,

as a client, as a person;

advocating for her interests

for herself, for her children.

seeking to do the right things

navigating the shoals present

competing choices before us;

seeing her first as a person

of sacred worth to God;

advocating for her interests

On Cedar Street

Sometimes I would see

the flash of recognition

on the face of the client, the bailiff

when I mentioned my home address

living on Cedar Street,

between Maple and Beech

in downtown Manch-Vegas;

Instant understanding

of my own kinship

more able to represent them

those on the margins

those from neighborhoods

more like my own

in downtown Manch-Vegas.
