Leaders, of our nation
a day from work, from toil
to ponder their legacy,
this place, this idea
this aspirational experiment
on this continent,
these joined states
Men of flesh, of blood
chosen by us, by fate,
to lead, for good or ill,
to build a nation, to hold the union,
quell injustice, increase rights
struggle with war, with strife,
greed, and with hate
Lead us, for better or worse,
north and south, red and blue,
young and old, rich or poor
one nation under God’s watchful eye
Manifest destiny, and humble superpower
or Rome ready for a fall
depending on the president
and the path
they choose
down the years to come
