holding her baby
in the quiet of the stable
not a silent night;
but all was calm
all was bright
after the star,
the shepherds,
after his noisy birth.
a silent night,
rest, finally,
fell down upon her
for Mary, for Jesus,
holding her baby
the Messiah long-foretold
the One sent to save us
the living Son of God
