was it a carpenter’s hands
the calloused hands of Joseph
the first to touch the Christ
the Messiah, our Savior
as Mary gave birth
to her baby boy
was she alone with Joseph
strangers in his hometown
the ancient home of David
the shepherd-king;
no room for them
no family, no friends
was it a carpenter’s hands
the calloused hands of Joseph
the first to hold Jesus
the Messiah, Emmanuel,
the first to hold the Savior
of the whole world.
