I had assumed the worst,

that it was too late for me,

but God gave me the best;

the answers to my prayers

peace, new rest

I assumed the worst

that the cost was mine to bear,

but God gave me grace

peace beyond understanding

The benefit covering

more than I imagined

the weight lifted from me;

God’s gift of grace

Fallen, a victim of indifference

of war, of sectarian conflict

A refugee seeking safety

from his war-torn homeland

An indictment of humanity

of war, of violence, of strife

Our indifference at the chaos

a moment, a crossroads

An image burned in our memory

as the tragedy, the crisis, unfolds

the rock thrown into the water;

Sending out ripples

to become a great wave

May I not wait for others

for an apology from those who hurt us;

Seeking to follow Christ’s command

to love as He loved (and loves) us

May I heed the calling

the command of Jesus;
