Chained by my debt

Chained by my debt
the judgment against me
a sentence of work
chasing Mammon
to pay my obligation
to settle my debt
to set the scales right

Chained by my debt
Matthew 6:24
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise
the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
 (King James Version KJV)
“You can’t worship two gods at once. Loving one god,
you’ll end up hating the other. Adoration of one feeds
contempt for the other. You can’t worship God and Money both.”
 (Message)
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and
love the other, or you will be loyal to the one and have contempt
for the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

 (Common English Bible)

Consumers – v3

We are told to be something
counter to our faith
consumers, not stewards,
to use the precious earth
to feed as we may choose

Leaving none left behind
going to the edge of the field
every last bit of the gleaning,
and going far beyond

Like a plague or war on the land
like locusts, consumers,
the Prodigal we have become
wasting what we have
caring not for our Father’s love

Taking what we can
gorging on our wealth
leaving nothing in our wakes
but debt, and hurt and ache

Black Friday, Gray Thursday – v6

We grieve for the lack of faith
for the disbelief in God
for the merchandise, the junk
that gets in the way of worship

Another sign, surely
of the end times, of Satan,
Black Friday, Gray Thursday
shopping without end

Nothing of Jesus, of the Christ
of our Savior, our Lord
we are all lost sheep, Prodigals,
lost, gorged on the world

Consumption Like Locusts – v3

insanity, madness,
beyond all reason
the consumer society
on full overload

the turning, away from the world
lost in the frenzy, the delusion
to buy it now

Christ is the center
the reason for the season
He came from heaven
He was the gift

wearing the skin of the Servant

clothe yourself in ashes
robe yourself in purple
wearing the skin of the Servant
who washed us with His blood

Cover yourself with camel hair
eating locusts, wild honey
garb yourself for service
the yoke upon your neck

clothe yourself in ashes
robe yourself in purple
wearing the skin of the Servant
who washed us with His blood

Cover yourself with dust
with prayers upon your path
walk as a servant
where the Servant led

clothe yourself in ashes
robe yourself in purple
wearing the skin of the Servant
who washed us with His blood
