Like our Lord, Stephen’s prayer
was for the leaders
the scribes, the Pharisees,
the chosen people, stoning him
while they were killing him
praying for their forgiveness
for their blindness, for their deaf ears
that they would see Christ
would know as he does, that He is Lord,
the Messiah the prophets foretold
Echoing Jesus’ prayer,
a reflection of the savior
his faith, even in martyrdom
