In the wilderness, in the darkness
the fields, watching our sheep
going about our business
with not enough sleep
If God’s glory descended on us
if the angels called our name
would we be terrified like them
before the great I Am
Would we have listened intently
would we have steeled our trembling legs
would we have run to Jesus
to bow at his manger bed
If God’s glory descended on us
if this were the night of His coming
descending on the wings of the clouds
to bring His people home
Would we run to Jesus
to grasp his royal gown
would we cleave to our Savior
would we wear a crown
