Unlike Any Birth Announcement

Unlike any birth announcement
the world had ever known
the first to be told
the shepherds in the fields

Not the rulers,
not members of the family
strangers on the hillside
the first to hear the news

And the ones sharing the news
angels from on high
coming down from heaven
God’s kingdom drawing nigh

The ones like David
the line of the king
watching their flocks by night
sleeping in the field

Come to stable
to his manger bed
bowing before the Savior, there
just as the angel said
