Maybe the metaphor shouldn’t be
pebbles thrown into the pond,
ripples expanding outward, spreading;
maybe the more apt analogy
the hope, and the trepidation
for a day focused on our issue
is the idea of a hammer blow to the ice
to change the course of a glacier
to right the scales of justice
the ice becoming thin and melting,
or just growing perhaps, the changes,
the hollow thunk and shock waves below
Creating
cracks, fissures,
the faint then growing thunder
of the cracks building, splitting,
shards of jagged edges,
calving without apparent order
crushing, falling into the ice stew
to ponder and explore
seeing a rise of justice
equality between peoples
across the planet, rising
from the kernel of an idea
to focus on our issue,
at least for one day
