Freedom is an illusion

Freedom is an illusion

if it is bound to poverty

if we are unequal

in reality

Freedom is nothing

without justice

a true chance to prosper

to meet our own potential

Freedom is a lie

the dream remaining

but America is broken

writhing in pain

Freedom is cruel

in greed and self-loathing

lost in the mire of our fiction

that all people are free

Freedom is lost

in the muck, the delusion

that we are the greatest

exceptional as a nation

Freedom is a string

held by the puppeteer

a dance he calls

limited our steps

Freedom is a dream

if it is bound to oppression

limits on our freedoms

the haves and have nots
