was not the right venue, the right ambiance
the right place at all
We needed to be in a dark, clove-smoke-filled room
sipping espresso and wearing berets
speaking of Dylan, Luther, Descartes
Nietzsche, of Walden, of excess
of the Grapes of Wrath
and Lord of the Flies
Reading Allen Ginsberg
Bee Bop, cool jazz
Living the grunge beat life
to get to the truth, the heart of our jive
Arguing the essential nature of man
is he a carnal beast or controlled by
better angels, teacher and oh-so-certain
high school Junior, picking a fight,
fighting, with facts, reason, bluster
for causes without consequence
better a grade in a team-taught course
than losing for trying, arguing,
no effect on anything
but debating skills
