A metal slug, a coin

A piece of metal, coins of the realm,
We had once gathered, a talisman,
In the road where I was walking,
Familiar, picked up, remembered,
Placed again in my pocket.

Found again, by accident,
under the papers, the chaos,
Filling my desk, forgotten,
A piece of my history,
Of my childhood play.

Climbing trash piles,
Dirt piles at the end of our road,
Construction debris by the river,
Gathering these coins,
Commandos with G.I. Joes,
Toy guns at the ready.

Climbing, tumbling,
Kings of the mountain,
Later cherry bombs and M80’s,
Outside until dark, playing,
Coming at our mothers’ call…

A metal slug

A knockout hole from an electrical box
conduit knockouts found on a walk
in Middleburg, FL, about 2 years ago,
About playing, in Westfield, MA,
Probably in 1967-1970

In stubbornness – v9

In stubbornness, in pride
I leave, I run away;
I go my own way, defiant.
I deny the need for the cross;
I deny my need for God.

In stubbornness, self-centeredness,
as if in my own person, creation.
For a moment I believe the lie of the self-made man,
not needing the Creator, the Savior;
Lost in the myth, our collective self-delusion.

In stubbornness, in blindness,
wandering in the same filth
as the one, the Prodigal Son.
The pigs eat fully,
but I am lost, hungry.
I need the cross, to survive;
I need God’s love.

In stubbornness, in pride
I leave, I run away
I go my own way, defiant
denying the need for the cross
denying the need for God
seeking another path
wanting to cleave to Him
needing another way
leaving the world behind me.

Repenting of my sinful pride – v3

Here in this land of plenty
an illusion of power
that we are somehow worthy
focused upon our lives
making of ourselves idols
worshiping earthly treasure

Only when I submit
repenting of my sinful pride
aware of my clay, my flaws,
the cracks, my imperfections
only when I am conscious of the distance
how far You are above me

Only then am I truly able
to receive Your blessing
Your grace pouring out on me
Then, only then, may I serve You,
sharing Your message
Your light to the world.

In stubbornness – v7

In stubbornness, in pride
I leave, I run away
I go my own direction, defiant
denying the need for the cross
denying the need for God
thinking I am able, on my own,
independent in myself

In stubbornness, self-centeredness
as if in my own person, creation
I believe the lie of the self-made man
the Horatio Alger stories,
pulling myself up by my bootstraps,
not needing the Creator, the Savior
lost in the myth, our collective self-delusion

In stubbornness, in blindness
wandering in the same filth
the one, the Prodigal Son
the pigs eating fully
but I am lost, hungry, empty,
needing the cross, to survive,
needing God’s love

Arrogant self-sufficiency

An illusion, a mirage, a lie
arrogant self-sufficiency
looking within for all
Claiming too much,
running away, lost
wandering from the center
your holy presence
Needing the Father
the Savior, healing
confession, submission
coming into the center
the loving presence of God.

The Lord restores me to serving

When I become humble
when I know awe
the majesty of your presence
then, only then
the Lord restores me to serving
worthy of your blessing, worthy
to use me for your purpose
to put me to doing
sharing your holy word.

For so much of my life

One saved soul

One life recovered
brought from the pit
the ledger in heaven
redeemed from the fire
into the flock
joy in heaven
a song in the wind
for a life such as this
restored from evil
into God’s light
more souls in heaven
the city burning bright

not about the righteous
the ones close by

More joy in heaven
love beaming bright
one rescued light

Rejoice, celebrate with me

The found coin, the recovered sheep
the lost soul, brought back from the deep
God’s joy evident, a song up above
rejoice, celebrate with me
sing of his love

One sinner who repents

joy in heaven
songs of thanksgiving
one sinner who repents
one sheep back to the flock
one coin found
God’s joy complete
the Father smiling
one prodigal come home
in to his loving arms.
