Released – v3

I could hardly believe it
but it is so typical
in this land of plenty;
There are two kinds of healthcare
for the haves and have nots

He was released, discharged
aches unexplained
before he was ready;
Caught in the cracks
the gaps in the system

He was sent home with questions
an incomplete diagnosis;
Pushed to the curb
for a lack of insurance
sent home too soon

Now comes working,
a graveyard shift before him,
the clock still ticking;
Hoping there won’t be a crisis
on the weekend
during the holidays

The angle of the straw – v3

this was important
his hand upon the cup
his hand upon the wheel
charting his own course
a bit of gossamer, of whimsy
reclining his bed
seeking strength
a longing for nourishment
to regain control
the angle of the straw
to achieve his purpose
a quick intake of liquid
to regain his freedom
his hand on the wheel

Just In Case – v2

so much of that space,
the sterile hospital room
things in place, just in case,
 something immediate
should happen

tube for oxygen
the IV at the ready
tissues just in case
a sneeze comes over us

a phone in case it rings
bringing us close to another
a bell to push
to bring assistance running
a basin for the oops. . .
and a receptacle for the other

so much of that space,
of our lives for that matter,
just in case, something immediate
should happen

tissues just in case
a sneeze comes over us
a phone in case it rings
bringing us close to another

a bell to push
to bring assistance running
a basin for the oops
and a receptacle for the other
