in the flames emboldened
timid, tentative,
doubting messengers
empowered, given voice
in the tongues of fire,
the non-consuming,
the living flames
dancing in their midst
burning fire transforming
their spirits
the Holy Spirit of God
commissioning the pilgrims,
shepherds now, bringing
the master’s voice
to the wayward flock
offering Christ to the world
