A Treasured Trivet
I remember well
making that old little trivet
popsicle sticks, real ones
not craft sticks made for that purpose
these still were stained with
the red of cherry
little bits of porcelain tiles
mesh backing to pull apart
so the glue would stick
a cross-hatch pattern
with a bible verse added
A simple trivet, made in
vacation bible school
thirty-five years ago
still in use,
in my mother’s kitchen
