well before he was born

The story of Luke
the coming of the Christ-child
started at the beginning
well before he was born
the visits by the angels
to Zechariah, to Mary
their different responses
to messengers from God
the cousins, Mary and Elizabeth
each facing pregnancy
unexpected in their own ways
Joseph visited in a dream
told to name him Jesus
Zechariah naming his son
in that moment, he could speak
the sons in the womb
knowing each other’s presence
so close to the king
John lept in his mother’s womb
