If we want to be Christ’s disciples
If we seek to follow his teachings
Maybe we should begin
with the new command he gave them
on the night of his betrayal
while evil stalked the night
to love as he loves us
giving his life for us
We are called to love unconditionally
more than as we would love ourselves
we are to love as Christ loved us
bowing before the disciples
washing their feet
offering his body, his blood
even to Judas, letting him go
out into that night, drinking the cup
our shame, our stain, our sorrows
climbing the cross in love
