hearing the thread of history - v2

If we listen to the words
the story of that people
of their slavery in Egypt
of the choice of their leader
hearing the thread of history

echoes in our own land
of another time, a leader
freeing our fellow man
war was the crucible
reforming, refining
reshaping our union

echoes too, this century
struggle of that same people
seeking greater liberty
respect, the right to vote
equality in our time
a more perfect union

a more perfect nation
but the work continues
our journey not complete
until all are truly equal
equal to our creed
