There is something rare
something grand
something right
about the graves of New
Orleans
not hidden flat stones
carved names
in the dirt and grass
not plain letters and dates
of so many graveyards
lost to the sands of time
These are cathedrals
homes for the dead
worthy vessels
for our forebears
festooned with mirth and
reverence, with Spanish moss
and southern charm
tenements and flats
calling to us
to stay awhile
to spend time with them
