Like infant pitcher plants
the shape of the leaves
pushing up through;
The litter of last fall’s
leaves
awakening in spring.
New soft-slate-green, cups
tulips, rising from the
grey-brown;
Mouths open, yearning
as if drinking the light
rising into the morning.
