The
street people, the lost,
those
homeless and alone
the
police on the beat
these
were the shepherds watching
in
the cities, the urban landscape
in
the darkness, each cold night
in
the breach, on patrol
They
would be the ones, those who cry out,
answering
the angel’s call
going
to that place under the bridge
where
the Christ-child was born
in
the humble estate
there
to find the father and mother
the
child wrapped as best they could
Kneeling
at the Savior’s bed
a
box, newspapers, that was all
there
in the cold of that night
hearing
the songs of the angel choir
answering
the angels’ call to them
to
go and exalt Him
our
newborn King
Out
into the world, the streets,
proclaiming
the Messiah’s birth
these
people, these shepherds
wondering
who would listen to the message
such
humble witnesses, these shepherds,
alone
in the night, out in the streets
proclaiming
the coming of God
