It was the street people
homeless and alone
they were the shepherds watching
in the cities, the urban landscape;
They were the ones watching in the dark,
in the city that cold night
They would be the ones
who
heard the songs of the angel choir
going to the place under the bridge
where the Christ child was born;
They found the father and mother and
the child wrapped as best they could
They knelt at the bed of Jesus
a box, newspapers, that was all
there in the cold of night
with nothing
to give Him but their presence;
They heard the songs of the angel choir
answering the angels’ call
Out into the world
the
shepherds, the homeless,
proclaiming the Messiah’s birth
wondering who would listen to the message;
Such humble witnesses out there,
alone in the night, out in the streets
